Geometrics & Florals
Geometric and floral designs are great in both country houses and in city apartments. The rug pictured here, for instance, has its home in a beautiful Riverside Drive apartment, in a red room no less! It fits perfectly. I take a lot of liberties with my designs and love combining a 19th century-inspired work method with a modernist point of view. By clicking on an image or its title in the column below, you'll be taken to a larger view of the rug.

Golden Tulips Home
Golden Tulips Home is a variation on a favorite theme. It speaks of Spring, wind, and lovely early morning pink skies. It measures approximately 9" high by 17" wide and is made of hand-dyed and as-is wools on a linen foundation. There's a muslin sleeve that holds a dowel for easy wall display. It's price is $160. Pink Tulip
Pink Tulip is a rescued rug. Sometimes I start a rug and then move on to something else before finishing it. When I discover it years later, it's always a pleasure. All the ideas from a while ago seem fresh and give me a way to improve my work. This rug is all about Spring -- pink and yellow, an odd tulip with red blooms on the ends of the leaves. The bulb is reflected in the small lamb's tongue shapes at the bottom. It measures 16"h by 12"w and costs $250. Click here to go to my Big Cartel shop. | Click title for larger image.
Two Tulips Four Hearts
This large rug, measuring 30" high by 25" wide, is a take-off on the 19th century theme of flowers in a strange vase surrounded by a border with hearts. The wide border on this rug has stripes of multi-colored blues and small curvy hearts at each corner. It's a statement rug, large enough to make an impact in even a big room. It's available for purchase for $700. Please click here to visit my online shop. | Click title for larger image.
Crossing the River
This rug is used on the floor by the bed in a deep, exciting red bedroom in a lovely city apartment. The tiny amount of bright red makes this basically brown and tan rug fit in perfectly with the striking color scheme. | Click title for larger image.
Blue Diamonds
I remember working on this rug, one of my first really big adventures in rugmaking, in July. It was, needless to say, very hot work with it lying on my lap. This was made before I invested in a frame that held the rug off my lap. But I still had fun making it! It's 28" by 40" and made of hand-dyed fabric almost exclusively. The foundation is burlap. It is one of my favorite rugs. This kind of rug looks wonderful wherever its placed – in a country house or city apartment. Old-fashioned or modern – how interesting that it can be in both worlds. This rug is in our family's collection. | Click title for larger image.
Red & Green Diamonds
One of the very first rugs I made, long before I thought of myself as a rug maker, was a larger rug much like this one with green and red as its main color direction. I love that combination, though it's tricky to make it something other than Christmas related. It certainly is an 18th and 19th century color theme. The first rug I made, of which this is a variation, is by my bed and warms my feet when I wake up every morning. | Click title for larger image.
Oak Leaves
Oak Leaves, a commissioned rug, is quite large and took a while to make. The greens in the leaves are varied so that there is visual interest in each one. I love acorns, so I put quite a few in the rug. The side borders are reminiscent of acorns but more abstract than anything else. The light fern stems really make the rug come alive. This is in a private collection in a beautiful country house north of New York. | Click title for larger image.
Gold-Edged Star
I found this small rug in my "rugs abandoned-will return to someday" pile. Glad I did. It was sweet to finish it. Sometimes stars say so much – the innocent symbols in our world. It measures 10" high by 11" wide, made of hand-dyed and as-is wools on burlap. It's in a private collection in Pennsylvania.

Pumpkin Blossoms
Featured in Early Homes magazine's product page in the Fall of 2009, this rug is 14" high by 24" wide. It reminds me of lattice or stained glass. It's made of as-is and hand-dyed wools on a burlap foundation and comes with a sleeve and dowel to hang it on the wall. This rug is available for purchase for $300. Hand in Heart
I was honored when a friend who is one of the very best traditional wood carvers in the country emailed to see if this rug was available. It's in the dining room of his house in Vermont. | Click title for larger image.
For the Love of Ivy
Sometimes it's a good idea to resist bright colors, wild colors, odd combinations and make a rug that works with just a few subdued colors and try to make the most of it. I really like the liberties I took with the leaves, making them broken up in a way that at first seemed that it wouldn't work, but ended up being a really good solution. This rug is on the landing of the stairs in a country house in Millbrook, NY. | Click title for larger image.
Ivy's Hearts
I've saved many drawings, paintings and assemblages that my daughter made throughout her childhood. She seems to have been born with an instinctive talent for making exuberant geometric designs. Lucky me – I've been able to use her wonderful work as a jumping off place for rugs on more than one occasion, always with her permission. Here her drawing was filled with hearts and shapes that seemed perfect for a rug. This rug is in a private collection – my daughter's. | Click title for larger image.
Red Tulip Home
Red Tulip Home is a variation on the theme I've used many times. It welcomes friends to your home and makes you dream of Spring. I like the way the different tans are like the wind in the Spring, making everything vibrate with color. This rug measures 9" high by 17" wide, has a blue flower-sprigged calico binding, and has a muslin sleeve for display. This happy rug is in a private collection of a talented quiltmaker in Pennsylvania. | Click title for larger image.
Diamond Flowers
Diamond Flowers, part of the chargers series, is a take off on an earlier rug. I love the way the orange and light blue work together, and the plaid in the interior of the flowers is really interesting. The center green shape is like a kite, so makes looking at this rug bring summery memories. This rug measures 14" square, but a variation on it could be made any size. | Click title for larger image.
